When people consider their liver, they often think in terms of a ‘detox’ or around alcohol. But your liver is really more like your body’s behind-the-scenes support team - working all day, every day, to keep you feeling steady, energised, and well.

What your liver actually does (in real life terms)

Your liver helps your body with:

  • Digestion - it makes bile, which helps you break down fats.
  • Hormone balance - it helps process hormones (including oestrogen, progesterone, and testosterone).
  • Energy & blood sugar - it helps regulate blood sugar, which influences cravings, mood, and energy.
  • Metabolism - it processes nutrients and many substances that enter your bloodstream.
  • Neutralising pollutants - it helps your body handle environmental exposures.

The surprising part: liver strain can be “quiet”

The liver can lose a significant amount of its capacity without obvious, diagnosable disease. That’s one reason it’s worth supporting early—before you feel completely run down.

Clues your liver may be under pressure

People often notice liver strain indirectly, such as:

  • Feeling tired or sluggish more often
  • Struggling with cravings or appetite swings
  • Feeling “off” hormonally (especially around cycles or perimenopause)
  • Digestive ups and downs that don’t seem to settle

(If you’re ever worried about symptoms, it’s always wise to speak with a qualified healthcare professional.)

A supportive mindset (not aggressive “detox”)

Think support, not harsh cleanses. The liver is already doing a lot - your goal is to make its job easier with steady daily habits.

Simple daily support ideas

Try one or two of these this week:

  • Add cruciferous veg more often (like kale, cabbage, pak choi, rocket, mustard greens).
  • Cook with garlic, onions, or leeks (the allium family).
  • Start your day with warm water + fresh lemon if it suits your digestion.
  • Prioritise regular meals to support steadier blood sugar.
